The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS)*, also known as NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation), is India’s independent GNSS solution designed to provide accurate positioning services over India and the surrounding region. NavIC enhances resilience, reduces dependence on foreign GNSS, and delivers high-precision navigation for civilian and strategic applications.
IRNSS/ NavIC Frequency Band Advantages
- Designed for Regional Accuracy
Tailored for high-precision coverage over India and the surrounding region, providing reliable PNT services for critical applications. - Interoperability with Multi-GNSS Systems
Works alongside GPS, Galileo, BeiDou, and QZSS to improve positioning accuracy and ensure redundancy in challenging environments. - High-Accuracy Dual-Frequency Signals
Operates on both L5 and S-band frequencies, offering enhanced ionospheric error correction and robust positioning for civilian and military use. - Future-Proofing for Emerging Applications
Evolving to support next-generation applications, including autonomous vehicles, UAVs, 5G NTN, and disaster management systems.
* The IRNSS/NavIC system is developed, operated, and maintained by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) under the oversight of the Government of India. The operational management, technical development, and maintenance of the system are led by ISRO’s Space Applications Centre (SAC) and ISRO Navigation Centre (INC). Civilian applications and international collaboration efforts are coordinated by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to promote global adoption and regional integration of NavIC.
